Condor Airlines Adds Mattress Toppers To Business Class

Condor Airlines joins the small list of airlines offering mattress toppers.

Condor Airlines is adding blankets to its lay-flat business class seating offering. Considering Condor Airlines’ commitment to long-haul flights from Frankfurt, Germany to North American destinations – such as New York City, San Francisco and Seattle where the Airbus A330neo is debuting.

Lück will create a mattress topper or a cushion between the passenger and the mattress, providing additional cushioning for sleeping passengers on all types of A330neo business class seating. The mattress toppers will be made of sustainable materials. The mattress topper will be placed over a 76-inch long by 19-inch-wide bed created from one of 30 lie-flat seats aboard the A330neo.

As if this was insufficient sleep comfort, Condor Airlines offers other amenities to help with sleep. Each business class guest receives a premium pillow, a cozy 6.5-foot blanket, socks, Condor's signature striped slippers, and a sleep mask for starters.

It's worth noting the socks are made of 100% recycled Polyethylene terephthalate or PET, the most common material that makes polyester. Unlike Delta Air Lines and Alaska Airlines, Condor Airlines’ earplugs come in a paper package. Furthermore, the viscose sleeping mask is made of bamboo fibers.

Yes, the Airbus A330neo design helps enable passengers to sleep while flying onboard. For instance, Airbus says the A330neo Airspace Cabin, with high ceilings and ergonomic sidewalls, helps de-stress the cabin. The LED lighting is intended to give airlines the ability to brand via lighting, set the right ambiance and address jet lag.

Additionally, there are illuminated handrails, and each seat has access to the aisle for maximum safety. Finally, the air circulation system has been improved to reduce ambient noise to create a peaceful cabin.

As if this is insufficient, the Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines have been engineered to be more efficient and quieter. The Trent 7000s have halved emitted noise versus their predecessors which helps those who don't sleep by ambient turbofan noise.

Although the intent of most of these changes was not to reduce airframe noise but jet fuel burn, the byproduct of quietness is appreciated by both travelers and airport neighbors. After all, noise is a typical symptom of mechanical inefficiency.

Mattress toppers on airliners didn't start with Condor Airlines. For instance, Gulf Air business class had such back in 2019.

Furthermore, according to Runway Girl Network in an October 25, 2022 article, Finnair and Japan Airlines offer mattress toppers. As Ellie Parkes, business development manager at John Horsfall which created Finnair's mattress topper shared with Runway Girl Network;

"Since lie-flat beds have become synonymous with long-haul flight, making that sleep experience as luxurious as possible is the inevitable next step for onboard designers. A mattress pad offers an extra level of comfort as well as a reassuringly hygienic sleeping surface."

Hence the idea of having a pad that can be easily cleaned and if needed be replaced before the next long-haul flight.
